Louvred pergolas

What it is

A louvred pergola is a freestanding powder-coated aluminium frame with a roof of adjustable louvres. Turn them open for sun and air, or close them and the roof sheds rain into gutters built into the frame and down through the posts, so you can sit out in a shower.

Warm-white LED lighting runs round the frame as standard, the louvres can be manual or motorised, and it comes in black, anthracite, latte and light stone. Sizes run from 3m × 3m up to 8m × 3m.

Louvred pergolas

Open or closed in

Leave all four sides open, or add what the spot needs: fixed or adjustable privacy louvres against a neighbour's window, drop-down blinds for low sun, frameless glass walls and sliding doors to make an outdoor room, or a hanging fire bowl for colder evenings.

Glass walls, doors and blinds need a level surface underneath, which is one more reason the base matters.

Louvred pergolas

The base is the part that matters

Most pergola problems start underneath. A frame bolted to block paving, gravel, decking, tarmac or a thin slab can shift, and once it is out of square the louvres bind and the gutters stop draining.

Because we build patios and bases for a living, we check what yours is sitting on before anything is ordered. If it is up to it, we fix to it. If not, we put concrete pads under each post or build a new patio on a proper sub-base, and take the roof water to a drain, soakaway or border rather than across the paving.

Planning

A freestanding pergola in a rear garden is normally permitted development if it stays behind the front of the house, is no more than 2.5m high at the eaves and 2.5m overall within 2m of a boundary, is not on a platform more than 30cm high, and with any other outbuildings covers no more than half the garden.

In a conservation area it cannot go between the side of the house and the boundary, and a listed house needs planning permission. Stamford's Article 4 direction is aimed at work facing a road, footpath or open space. We check the height of the model you choose against these limits, and all of this, at the site visit.

Questions

Things people ask us

How much does a louvred pergola cost?
A louvred aluminium pergola starts from £4,500 supplied and fitted, for a 3m × 4m frame on a suitable existing base. Bigger sizes, motorised louvres, side screens, glass walls and any new base are priced after the site visit. In a rear garden it is normally permitted development.
Can a pergola go on my existing patio?
Often, if it is a properly laid patio on a full mortar bed over a sub-base. Block paving, gravel, decking, tarmac and thin slabs usually need concrete pads under the posts. We check it at the visit.
Does a louvred pergola keep the rain off?
With the louvres closed, yes. Rain runs into gutters inside the frame and down through the posts, so we plan where that water goes.
Does a louvred pergola need a power supply?
Only for the lights and motorised louvres. They run on low voltage from an outdoor supply, which a registered electrician puts in and certifies.
Do I need building regulations for a louvred pergola?
Not for an open-sided pergola. Closing all four sides in with glass can change that, so we check it at the site visit.
What guarantee comes with a louvred pergola?
Our five year written workmanship guarantee covers the base and the installation, and the frame carries the manufacturer's own guarantee.
Do I need planning permission for a louvred pergola?
Usually not, if it is freestanding in the rear garden. It is normally permitted development as long as it stays behind the front of the house, is no more than 2.5m high within 2m of a boundary, is not on a platform over 30cm high, and, with other outbuildings, covers no more than half the garden. Listed homes need permission, and conservation areas rule out the side of the house. We check your chosen model's height against these limits.
Can a louvred pergola withstand wind and snow?
A well-made aluminium louvred pergola is designed to take wind and snow loads, but only if it is fixed to a solid base, which is where most problems start. Each manufacturer sets its own ratings and advice on what position to leave the louvres in during storms or heavy snow, and motorised systems can be fitted with wind or rain sensors. We anchor every post with stainless fixings into a sound patio or concrete pad, not into block paving or gravel.
How long does it take to install a louvred pergola?
The frame itself is usually fitted in one day. If your patio is not strong enough to fix to, the concrete pads or new patio go in first, and those need time to cure before the frame is bolted down, so the job runs over more than one visit. Glass walls, sliding doors and an outdoor power supply add time on top. The written proposal sets out each stage.
Can a louvred pergola be closed in with glass walls to make an outdoor room?
Yes. Frameless glass walls and sliding doors can be added to one or more sides, alongside privacy louvre panels and drop-down blinds. Glass needs a level, solid surface underneath to run true, so the base has to be right first. Closing all four sides can change the building regulations position, because it starts to behave like a room rather than an open structure, so we check that at the site visit before anything is ordered.
Should I choose a louvred pergola or a glass veranda?
Choose a louvred pergola if you want a roof you can open for sun and air, and a structure that can stand anywhere in the garden. Choose a veranda if you want it fixed to the back of the house with a fixed clear roof that keeps the kitchen light. The pergolas we fit are freestanding, on their own posts, so they need no wall fixing. A veranda is the house-mounted option, and we fit both.
